Prevention of window detachment
A common failure mode for windows subjected to high loads is the detachment of the glass from the frame or structure to which it is fitted. If the connection is inadequate, the glass panel can peel out of the frame or be ejected in the event of mechanical force or pressure from cyclones or blast loads.
Principle of resistance to high impact and blast loads
Glassform has developed and patented a solution to mechanically anchor laminated glass to its supporting structure. A metal frame (usually stainless steel) is bonded to the structural laminating interlayer of the glass panel. In the event of high impact forces which fracture the glass and/or allow it to flex, the interlayer behaves as an energy absorbing membrane anchored to the structure by the integral metal frame. Even if the glass is fractured, provided the membrane is not breached, the window remains as a barrier connected to the structure and prevents the passage of material or a blast wave through the window.
Installation Options
metl-edge™ panels can be installed in a conventional frame in the same way as a standard panel of laminated glass of the same thickness. In this configuration, the edge or corner of the metl-edge™ panel cannot be peeled out of the frame because of the strength and stiffness of the metal component.
Alternatively, a metl-edge™ panel can be connected to a structure (which can be a building, vehicle, vessel or aircraft) with fasteners such as bolts, screws or rivets which pass through holes or slots in the metal component. This feature is particularly useful for windows of vehicles working in mines or steel mills which need a damaged glass panel to be replaced quickly and easily by semi-skilled personnel.
